Coming to Sydney to learn the art of music video direction at the Sydney Film School, the Pakistani born musician thought he would be putting composing and performing aside. However, he couldn’t stay still for too long. The people he met while living and studying in Sydney inspired him to take on the project entitled ‘Project Down Under’ and gather a dozen independent Australian musicians and artists to perform and film songs dedicated to charity.

‘We Could be Paradise’ was recorded in June 2008 at the Everland Studios in Alexandria, the manager  of which offered Mahmood free studio recording time, on the strength of his demo alone.

Continuing the collaboration with his fellow Sydney Film School graduates, Mahmood also shot a music video for the song and the documentary ‘Journey of Sound’ about ‘Project Down Under’ itself.

Now he is about to hit the stage at one of the most exciting venues in the world – the Sydney Opera House. Already well known in the Indian sub continent, Mahmood is spreading his wings abroad. On March 14th 2009, joined by a list of guest musicians, he will share his songs and performances with the multicultural audiences Australia has to offer.

Mahmood Khan already has an incredibly successful track record as a singer/songwriter, selling over 6 million albums, including an international hit record with Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. While studying in Sydney Film School, he also made two music videos for his songs released in India and Pakistan, at the time in high rotation on MTV India/Pakistan.

However, performing in the Opera House exceeds the wildest dreams he had when coming to Sydney and Mahmood isn’t hiding his enthusiasm. “It’s both exciting and humbling that considering my geographic disposition I get the opportunity to play at the Sydney Opera House”, he said.

In the Indian sub continent region, where original singer/songwriters are extremely rare, Mahmood’s love for original songs was kept alive and inspired by writers such as Barry Gibb, Michael Omartian, Paul Simon, Aziz Mian Qawal, John Denver, Stevie Wonder, David Foster and Arif Mardin. By fusing exotic instruments and American Funk he has developed a unique sound.
